As a Japanese language teacher and a creator, I spend much of my time thinking about connection. How do we truly understand one another?
In psychology, there is a concept called “Joint Attention.” It’s the simple yet profound act of two people focusing on the same object at the same time and sharing that experience. While we often associate this with child development, I believe it is the secret ingredient for all meaningful communication—especially in our adult lives.
1. Moving from “Talking” to “Sharing” In a language lesson or a video, I don’t just want to “transmit” information. I want to create a moment of “joint attention.” When we both look at a phrase, an idea, or a story, and find the same meaning in it, we are no longer just teacher and student or creator and audience—we are two people sharing the same world.
2. Why it matters for our “Ibasho” When we feel like we belong—our Ibasho—it’s often because we’ve shared a moment of “joint attention” with someone who truly saw what we saw. For those of us navigating our forties and defining our own paths, finding people who look at the same “horizon” as we do is what makes us feel understood and empowered.
3. A gentle nudge for the second half of 2026 Are you sharing your gaze with others? As you move forward in your career or your personal projects, take a moment to look at what truly matters to you.
Instead of saying “Let’s do this together,” which can sometimes feel a bit like an instruction, I want to say this: I would be so happy if we could share these beautiful moments together.
Final Thought Life is richer when we have someone who looks at the same horizon. As we navigate the rest of this year, it would bring me so much joy to share this space, and this gaze, with you.
