The other day, when I saw that memo that read “Notified, but did not show” at my destination, my heart stung a little, leaving me feeling restless and annoyed. As humans, living life means we inevitably run into moments where things don’t go our way, or situations that just frustrate us.
Yet, on another ordinary day, there are pleasant surprises—like when a neighborly old man kindly gifted me three flower seedlings out of the blue.
I wasted no time planting those three seedlings in the garden. Every time I water these flowers from now on, I know I’ll remember the old man’s warm smile and kindness, and my heart will feel gently warmed all over again.
Just a moment ago, my heart was all ruffled with a frustrated “Ugh!”, but the moment I touched someone else’s kindness, that prickly feeling smoothly melted away and calmed down.
Because we’re human, we sometimes get irritated, and we make mistakes. But precisely because we’re human, we can also be truly saved by someone’s kindness and share those warm feelings with one another.
The part of me that gets annoyed, the part of me that feels soothed by kindness—wrapping them all up together, it’s such a beautifully human and endearing way to live.
We don’t need to be perfect, and having emotional ups and downs is only natural. The earth keeps spinning today too, so while watering the new seedlings in the garden, I think I’ll brew a nice cup of warm tea and just take a deep breath.
