In Plato’s famous “Allegory of the Cave,” people are chained inside a dark cave, believing that the shadows cast on the wall are the only reality. For a long time, I realized I was living my life the same way—mistaking social expectations, “shoulds,” and peer pressure for the truth.
As we reach our forties, many of us start to feel that something is missing. If you feel like you are just watching “shadows” on the wall, perhaps it’s time to turn around.
1. Are you living by shadows? For years, I believed that success meant following a specific path. Those expectations felt like a safety net, but they were actually just shadows keeping me from the vibrant world outside. If you are feeling stuck, ask yourself: Is this path truly mine, or is it just a reflection of what others expect?
2. The courage to turn around Stepping out of the cave is daunting. It means admitting that the life you’ve built based on “shoulds” might not be your true reality. But in my own journey—navigating my career and finally finding my own “Ibasho” (a place where I belong)—I learned that the sunlight outside is far more beautiful than the comfort of the cave.
3. A message for the parents To all the parents out there: we often pass these “shadows” on to our children without realizing it. Instead of teaching them to stare at the wall, let’s show them the way to the entrance of the cave. Let’s help them discover the sunlight, the colors, and the infinite possibilities of the real world.
Final Thought You don’t need special permission to leave the cave. You only need to be curious enough to wonder what lies beyond the shadows. Your true “Ikigai” (reason for living) isn’t hidden in the dark—it is waiting for you in the light.
