The person I often mention on my blog and in my daily life is someone with a “green hand”—they are incredibly skilled at growing plants and flowers, and they often generously share wonderful plant seedlings with me.
The other day, wanting to express my daily gratitude, I went to give them a few fresh pears. When I did, they just smiled and said:
“I’m not doing this because I want anything in return, so it’s fine.”
Their words and the smart, gentle smile that made sure I wouldn’t feel awkward left a deep impression on my heart. Whenever we do something for others, I think it’s easy to unconsciously expect a “thank you” or some kind of return. But I could feel that this person simply cherishes the pure joy of growing plants and sharing that happiness with others.
Touched by the wonderfulness of such natural consideration, I strongly felt that I, too, want to become someone who can quietly bring warmth to others in that same pure way.
During this Obon season, just as I think of my ancestors, I find myself learning important lessons from the warm backs of the people around me every day. I hope to be someone who can quietly pass on a gentle baton of kindness to someone else.
