As I navigate my 40s, I’ve found myself looking at my life through a different lens. In my younger years, I was obsessed with “achieving” and “proving” what I could do on my own. But lately, I’ve come to realize how much I am supported by things I cannot always see.
In Japanese, we have a beautiful phrase: “Okagesama.”
It is more than just a simple “thank you.” It is a humble acknowledgement that “I am who I am today, thanks to the unseen support of many things around me.”
It’s the people I know and those I don’t. It’s the environment that surrounds me. It’s even the past version of myself who didn’t give up when things were tough. Everything—the good, the challenging, and the mundane—has played a part in shaping who I am right now.
At this stage in our lives, perhaps “Okagesama” is also about learning to forgive ourselves. It’s about letting go of the need to be perfect and, instead, feeling the quiet gratitude of simply being held by the vast web of life.
Tonight, take a moment to look around. Whatever you are doing, you are part of this beautiful, interconnected flow. There is so much that supports your daily life, and that is a truly comforting thought.
Let’s carry that warmth into tomorrow, one soft step at a time.
