Embracing the Frustrations and Kindness in a Heart That Never Rests

Living life means experiencing all sorts of things every single day, doesn’t it? As I wrote a bit about in a previous blog post, I’ve been struggling lately with second-hand smoke around our house.

Of course, I have no right to dictate whether someone chooses to smoke. But with the second-hand smoke drifting right into our home, and out of genuine concern for that young person’s own health, I tried to address it. However, instead of resolving it through direct communication, I heard that the person has been going around complaining about me to others… When I found out, an indescribable sense of helplessness and sadness spread through my chest.

Even when you express that you’re in trouble, not everyone understands right away. On top of that, while people around us say, “That really is tough,” there’s a difference between those who actually step in to help and those who don’t. …Does it all just boil down to people protecting themselves (“because I want to keep things easy for myself”)? Thinking that made me sigh at the complexities of human relationships.

Just as my heart was feeling completely frayed and thorn-edged, life worked its mysterious magic. Right when I was carrying all that lingering annoyance, another neighbor gifted me some lovely flowers today. What’s more, they even shared some home-grown vegetables they had carefully raised themselves.

One moment your heart is ruffled by people’s selfishness or coldness, and the next, you’re instantly saved by someone’s warmth. Truly, my heart is kept running on a busy rollercoaster every single day (laughs).

It’s not all rainbows and butterflies, but it’s not all coldness either. Because there are ups and downs, the everyday kindnesses sink so deeply into your soul. Experiencing all these various emotions today, I think I’ll go make a delicious meal with the vegetables I received.
