Human relationships are something that truly follow us for as long as we live, aren’t they?
The other day, someone told me, “Person A was saying such-and-such about you.”
Although I thought, There’s no way they would say something like that, a tiny seed of anxiety—maybe just a few percent—took root in my heart, and I struggled with it.
Not wanting to stay stuck in that murky feeling, I gathered my courage and decided to ask the person directly.
Their answer was simple—”I didn’t say that.”
Just as I had hoped, they hadn’t said it at all.
Unfortunately, there are people in this world who distort stories or exaggerate rumors.
By verifying it directly with the person, I uncovered the truth and felt a wave of relief. At the same time, it was an experience that gave me a lot to think about.
In Japan, we have long-held sayings and ways of thinking like these:
- “Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t want done to yourself.”
- “Kindness is not just for others.” (Kindness shown to others eventually circles back to you.)
- “Every action, good or bad, ultimately returns to the one who did it.”
It makes me deeply realize how wonderfully the world is structured. Every word we speak and every action we take gradually shapes our own future.
That is why I want to live as myself from now on—holding both the strength not to be swayed by second-hand rumors, and the kindness to believe in and care for others.
