I heard my father was born when my grandfather was 52 years old. There was about a 20-year age gap between my father and his eldest sister. When Japan lost the war, what would become of the country…? What about their children? Their future grandchildren? Carrying such heartfelt and desperate feelings, my grandfather was finally able to return to Japan a few years after the war ended. I went to the countries where my grandfather had traveled during the war to check my own answers. “Did Japan fight to protect Asia, to protect Japan…?” Wherever I went, to my surprise, there were so many places where I was warmly welcomed simply for being “Japanese.” The sunset I watched together with people from various countries at a tourist spot in a certain land is something I will never forget, now or ever. Being grateful for the arrival of the morning, and thanking the sunset for being able to live through today— Because I was able to share such a peaceful time with people around the world, I am certain that the world peace I idealize can be realized.
