“The Sun is Watching”: Why the Truth Always Comes to Light and Keeps Me Moving Forward

Living life means dealing with moments of unfairness, feeling frustrated by misunderstandings, or being hurt by thoughtless words from others when all you want to do is be sincere. At times like that, a comforting traditional Japanese mindset often comes to mind.

It is the belief that “There is only one truth. Whether good or bad, it will come to light sooner or later.”

In Japan, we have a wonderful concept known as “Otentosama ga miteiru”—the idea that the sun (or the universe/divine presence) is always watching us. Bad deeds done in secret will eventually be exposed, even if no one is watching at the time. And the exact same goes for good deeds: kindnesses and efforts practiced quietly out of sight will eventually be recognized and rewarded.

When facing relationship troubles, unkind gossip, or difficult, exhausting times when nothing goes your way… it’s easy to feel crushed by frustration and sadness.

Whenever I feel that way, I remind myself of the phrase “Otentosama is watching.” Even if no one else notices, and even if others don’t understand, you and the universe know the truth. Just holding onto that thought lightens my heart and gives me the courage to keep looking straight ahead.

Nights when I chose takeout because I didn’t feel like cooking, quiet moments watering my garden seedlings, the warmth of the flowers and home-grown vegetables gifted by a neighbor, and savoring my favorite blueberry yogurt. Whatever happens, living sincerely and staying true to yourself is something Otentosama watches over with care.

Let’s not get too caught up in the immediate chaos, and let’s hold onto our sincerity. Today too, wrapped in the comforting reassurance that “the sun is watching,” let’s walk forward at our own pace with a smile.
