What is Rakugo? — The Art of Minimalist Storytelling

Rakugo is a traditional Japanese art of storytelling where a single performer sits on stage and tells a story that is either comical (kokkei) or touches the heart (ninjo).

The story unfolds primarily through the dialogue between characters. With nothing but a folding fan (sensu) and a hand towel (tenugui), the performer uses gestures and voice alone to portray multiple characters and bring the scene to life.

Most stories end with a clever, witty twist, which we call the “Ochi” or “Sage” (the punchline).

I’ve taken up the challenge of creating a “Short Rakugo” piece, hoping to bring a little bit of this Japanese charm to your busy life.
